Cadets

Learn to sail

Cadet training is almost full for 2024,

but you are encouraged to put your name on the waiting list

Current cadets, please pay your fees now and we look forward to seeing you soon!

For those between 10 and 16 years old wanting to start learning  we have a Cadet section that provides RYA training at very low cost.  No need for a boat, just a wetsuit, a buoyancy aid and bags of enthusiasm.  Notices are usually put out in April with training starting in May on a Thursday evening from 19:00.  You're welcome to come and talk to somebody but remember to do so at the start of the season or you might have to wait a year to get going.

For everyone else there are plenty of opportunities to try a sail, learn from other members and crew onboard.  Come along to the clubhouse on a Wednesday evening between 19:30 and 21:00 and somebody will be happy to talk to you.  Please remember to wait until the racing is underway before asking too much.

Learning the ropes

The very start of training sees cadets out on the water as a team with one of our instructors learning the basics of sailing, sail handling, points of sail, rules of the road, etc.

Going Solo

Once you have got to grips with the basics we let you loose solo or two up on a Topper dinghy.  It's time to refine your skills with racing and games like pirates.  These give you the practical experience of points of sail, the rules of the "road", etc.

Advanced Hiking Out

The Laser 3000 is a performance dinghy used to teach about the use of more sails and skills such as trapezing.  Most often used by cadets staying on past 16, these hone the skills needed for cruising and racing on a wider range of boats.
