Pipers
Following a disappointing evening last Wednesday when the penultimate Series race of the season had to be abandoned when none of the Pipers could reach the first mark through lack of wind, the tables were more than turned at the weekend when a cold and gusty easterly breeze challenged the fleet at the Robert Love Memorial Regatta to remember an enthusiastic local member of the Piper contingent who owned and raced Tom Piper.
Unfortunately, only two Pipers made the starting line but they were the two front runners from this season and still anxious to establish bragging rights before the season’s climax at the Annual Polaris Regatta in a weeks time. Benefitting from the presence of guest crew Charlie Frize who was fresh from running last week’s International 8 Metre World Championships off Helensburgh, Fergus Campbell and Ali Gordon contributed the local knowledge to complete a perfect team in none other than Tom Piper herself to handle the testing conditions and win the Robert Love Trophy, no doubt pleasing her previous owner surveying the excitement from above!
Dinghies and Flying Fifteens
It was a very slow race on Wednesday night.
The dinghies launched into a force 1, which turned out to be the most wind all night. About three minutes before the start the wind died. The dinghies spent about 40 minutes drifting the 400 metres to the first mark, at times were going backwards. Just as they got to the mark a very gentle breeze came and took them around the rest of the lap at a slow pace. Only one Flying fifteen out of the 3 that started completed the course.
Unfortunately, the race officer was left with no choice but to abandon the race for the Pipers and White Sail as none managed to complete the course in the time limit.
