2025 Series 3 Race 2

A good turnout this week considering it is the middle of the holiday season, accompanied by a moderate north westerly wind that gradually died down during the race.

Pipers

Throughout the season the local Piper fleet have been carving out a well-deserved reputation of being the most exciting and closely matched racing class on the Clyde, and on Wednesday they enhanced this distinction yet further when, at the conclusion of a typical hard fought race, only fourteen seconds separated the first four boats with the remaining two close at hand.

Robert Towart’s Staypuff set the early pace after an audacious, though well-judged port tack start while Billie ( Iain Hurrel), another regular front runner, took up the reigns on the long beat back up the Loch. As they began the second round, however, Andy Love’s well turned out Tamarind had taken the lead with the ever-present threat of Jim Campbell’s Leander not far behind. After another enthralling circle of the Loch, the race could have been anybody’s as the fleet returned from Lazaretto Point to the finish and, despite Tamarind appearing to have the decisive edge, the ever present Tom Piper, sailed as usual by Fergus Campbell, Stuart Brown and Ali Gordon, exercised their years of experience and teamwork to perfection to hit the front for the first time with seconds to spare to give them the victory and plaudits from their sportsmanlike adversaries after a truly excellent race.
