It was good to see a few more boats make it to the start line this week, 12 in total.
The course was set in a light breeze from the west, with a short beat up past the
marina and then a long run down to the ‘old butchers shop’ at Strone. Due to a dying
wind the course was shortened at the end of the first round.
Pipers
The leading two Pipers in the first race looked like they would repeat the
performance this week as they sped off the starting line side by side, leaving
Opening Regatta winner last Saturday, Staypuff, for dead. As the race developed,
however, and the evening breeze faded, all four boats converged again on the final
leg to the finish to create a grandstand finale.
The early leader, Tom Piper, lost the wind at Lazaretto while Tass began to
challenge Sanderling for her lead, but suddenly the canny Robert Towart and his
enthusiastic Staypuff team of Caroline Clark and Charmaine Russell redeemed
themselves in spectacular style with a sprint finish to take line honours.
White Sail
Four boats started, Judicious J30 sailed in close to the wood pier and picked up a
good wind shift giving him an early lead which was never challenged. He was
followed by Moonshine, then Nemo, and finally Sarico. Nemo appeared as if he was
going to catch Moonshine but the wind was on Moonshines side.
Dinghies
Home Brew the Albacore was back out and made its first appearance of the season,
showing his light wind prowess. The Great Gonzo, RS400 lead the race bit once
handicaps were applied it was a win for Home Brew. They were joined by Killer B,
B14 but there was not enough wind for them.
