On Tuesday we saw start of Tuesday evening dinghy racing. It was great to see four boats taking part this week and it looks like there will be more participants next week as some sailors will be returning from holidays. In the light winds Harris Munns excelled in his Laser Radial. Iain Hurrel and Cat Craig in their Albacore scored a credible second place with the Laser Radials of Fin Hurrel and Darcy Cameron close behind.
On Wednesday, in the Piper Class, a reinvigorated Robert Towart, back from his holidays, took the initiative from the start in Staypuff, leading into the second leg until Iain Hurrel’s Billie hit the front. Such is the competition in this class that the lead changes from leg to leg, and after guest helmsman Duncan Munro from Gourock had steered Tom Piper into contention, Andy Love got his act together after a slow start and by the beginning of the second round had got his new boat, Tamarind into a healthy lead. Thereafter he didn’t put a foot wrong and his crew, Ross Noble and Andrew Paterson, were likewise, setting the spinnaker perfectly in the tricky close reaching conditions downwind to their advantage. Following some spirited performances in the early races of the season without achieving a winning gun, it was no surprise to witness Tamarind crossing the finishing line first to give her crew added confidence for the season ahead.
In the white sail fleet Jim Huey in Judicious took the win from Duncan Chalmers in Atia with Nigel Scriven in Moonlight taking third place.
In the dinghies the wind suited the Albacores with Peter McWhinnie and Archie Munns taking the win from Harris Munns and Fin Hurrel. The Contender of Neil Wilson took third place.
There was only one Flying Fifteen on the race course, and Tommy McGeachie took the win. There are rumours of more Flying Fifteens taking part in the coming weeks!
