On Saturday, the Holy Loch Sailing Club played host to the 58th anniversary of the Piper Class, which attracted entries from Gourock in addition to the home fleet which represented the birthplace of this classic yacht, designed by the legendary David Boyd of America’s Cup fame and built in the Sandbank yard of Alexander Robertson. Conditions were light and very testing and this was reflected in the varying results of the competing yachts in the three races sailed. Race Officer Bill Aitchison, however, used his vast experience to good effect in judging the fickle conditions to give excellent courses which tested the competitors throughout the day which produced a different winner in every race. Although the visitors from Gourock did top the overall results in the form of Class Champion Dougie Campbell and his crew of Peter Boyd and Iain Lambie in Tamarind, Iain Hurrel, Lorn Campbell and Graeme Murray took a well earned second while Ali Gordon’s Tom Piper maintained her early season’s showing by winning the final race handsomely. At the presentation of prizes, Class Captain Iain Hurrel thanked Secretary Rowena Donaldson for her hard work in organising the event, Bill Aitchison for dealing so well with the awkward wind conditions and Kenny Love and the supporting team for sustaining the competitors ample culinary requirements after the racing. A successful regatta was enjoyed by all.
Overall Results:
1st Tamarind D. Campbell 3pts, 2nd Billie I. Hurrel 4pts, 3rd Schwarze Lena D. Munro 4pts, Principal trophy winners Dougie Campbell, Iain Hurrel and Ali Gordon with their crews
